The effect of your manipulations serve to distance the figures you draw from the backgrounds significantly, as long as you use that technique they will never be cohesive and your control of the composition of your backgrounds will forever be beholden to the manner and quality of the references you can find and manipulate. Just dont forget to make some backgrounds from imagination from time to time, lest you become dependant and static.
